'Since when are Egyptians not white?': Rupert Murdoch defends all-white 'Exodus' cast

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has defended his film studio's upcoming film 'Exodus', saying criticism of the casting of white actors to play Egyptian roles is unfair.

"Moses film attacked on Twitter for all white cast. Since when are Egyptians not white?  All I know are," the 83-year-old wrote in a message posted on Twitter.
The film, directed by Ridley Scott and distributed by 20th Century Fox, stars British-born Christian Bale as Moses and Australian actor Joel Edgerton as his stepbrother and pharoah, Ramses.

The casting in the film has caused an uproar online with critics accusing the directors and producers of the film for 'whitewashing' African history.

Aaron Paul plays Joshua and Sigourney Weaver takes on the role of Rhamses mother, Tuya.

Joel Edgerton has previously told SBS News he understands the criticisms, but added that he was not going to turn down the role because of race.

"I do say that I am sensitive to it and I do, I do understand and empathise with that position," Edgerton said.

However, social media users have continued the #BoycottExodusMovie campaign, calling for people to boycott the film upon its release.

The film is scheduled to be released on 12 December.
