Deaf 101: Understanding Auslan's importance in the Deaf community

Our Deaf Ways is an Auslan vodcast series by SBS and Deaf Australia, that explores and celebrates everyday life as a Deaf person. In this episode, learn how Auslan compares and translates to English.

Over the course of six episodes, Our Deaf Ways features Deaf people from all walks of life and all ages talking about Deaf Ways. Produced in partnership with Deaf Australia and hosted by Deaf advocate Shirley Liu, the series features well-known figures in the Deaf community.


In this episode of Our Deaf Ways: Deaf 101
  • The story of how Australian Sign Language has developed over the past two hundred years.
  • How does Auslan compare and translate to English?
  • The need for wider usage and acceptance of Auslan to improve access for Deaf Australians in their first language.

Deaf 101 features a conversation between historian and linguist Darlene Thornton, and Managing Director of Auslan Consultancy James Blyth, reflecting on the history and continuing importance of Auslan (Australian Sign Language).

Darlene says "I’m really excited now to see what comes next, to see people ask more questions about Auslan, to see Auslan become more widely used. I hope that this podcast will be a good start to see that ball rolling."
Auslan is a deep and rich language which most people don’t realise.
