A month-long sausage festival is here

The best of the wurst, including a vegemite and cheese snag and a sausage dog dress-up parade.

Snag fans will tell you that only sometimes only a banger can sate their meaty appetite. And while Australians are no stranger to a sausage sizzle, Eastern Europe is home to a dizzying number of wurst (some sources say up to 1,500 varieties). Bratwurst, weisswurst, knackwurst, Frankfurters – the list goes on and has formed the inspiration for a month-long celebration of the wurst on the east coast.

From Feb 5 – March 4, a smorgasbord of sausages will be on offer at every Munich Brauhaus, Bavarian Bier Café and The Bavarian in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

The 20-sausage strong menu isn’t exactly what you’d expect – yes, there’s the classics (cheese kransky, chargrilled nurnberger and Frankfurter) but you’ll also find new snag incarnations like pork, haloumi and red pepper; Thai coconut; beef chilli chocolate; and an Australiana-themed beef, vegemite and cheese.

Each wurst comes served with either mash, mushy peas and bier jus; sauerkraut, potato salad and mustard; or in a bun with fries.

Yes, this is a festival for eaters, but the buck doesn’t stop at wolfing down wurst; you can dress up your sausage dog for the costume parade (there's dog treats and a $250 prize up for grabs, not to mention the Insta-glory that will be yours) and you can try out-eating your fellow sausage comrades for a cool $200 in bar tab loot.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more novel, there’s a two-foot wiener eating contest where those who can smash the giant sausage plus two sides within a minute score a limited edition sausage pack.

All of the puns. All of the sausages.
