It’s no secret that we Aussies love our coffee. 46 per cent of us drink it on the reg, including 15 per cent of 14-18 year olds (yikes!). And while coffee will always be number one in our hearts when it comes to hot beverages, we’re excited by the fun, quirky hot drinks coming out of some of our favourite cafes… just in time for the cold snap of winter.
In Sydney’s Marrickville, locally-beloved café Two Chaps sells a ginger and turmeric latte, made on almond milk. Golden in colour and deeply spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, it’s a flu-fighter in a cup, not to mention absolutely delicious. You can also find turmeric lattes at Bondi’s The Brunch Lady, and start-up Golden Grind will send you a 30-serve pack of the good stuff (a mix of ground turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper) for $19.95 (shipping is free). The Two Chaps folks are also serving up a beetroot hot chocolate, again made on almond milk. It’s pretty in pink and practically begging for its own hashtag. Made with raw cacao, coconut sugar and freshly squeezed beetroot juice, it’s a nice way to feel slightly more virtuous about indulging in a hot chocolate (not that we’d ever begrudge that!).
Matcha lattes have been around for a while now, but this winter, with the Japanese green tea product loved both for its pungent, earthy flavour and its superfood status, we predict they’ll be absolutely everywhere. Rabbit Hole Organic Tea Bar in Sydney (which is set to open another site in Barangaroo) sells a host of matcha lattes. Cre Asion, in Sydney’s CBD, is also matcha mad, with both a matcha cappuccino and latte on their menu. Beyond matcha, Rabbit Hole serves up plenty of other tea varieties – there’s a berry tea latte and a whole range of chais (the white chocolate chai definitely has us interested).
If you can’t go past the classics, Melbourne’s All Good Coffee serves a mean hot Milo, and in Sydney, Dr Faustus whips up a delicious hot malted milk (using Horlick’s, of course).
