Over the past few weeks, a very simple - yet incredibly delicious (yes, we've tried it) - dessert recipe went viral in Australia. Countless people were talking about making "crack".
No, they weren't breaking bad. 'Crack' is simply an easy-to-make treat, involving homemade caramel, Salada crackers and melted chocolate, with dealer's choice of sprinkled toppings, such as nuts, sea salt, pretzels, or dried fruit.
The recipe, which was adapted from this 'matzo crack' recipe by food blogger and author Deb Perelman on Smitten Kitchen, went viral in Australia after being mentioned on a podcast hosted by ABC's Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb, Chat 10 Looks 3.
The recipe for "Chatter's crack", the adapted version by Jo Waugh, can be found on the Chat 10 Looks 3 website.
Since this tasty treat has became a viral sensation, reports have surfaced of Saladas selling out around Australia. One site even said there was a "nationwide shortage" of the popular crackers.
One employee of SBS also noticed an empty shelf when she went to nab a box of Saladas at her local supermarket.
So you can understand our concern.
However, when SBS contacted major supermarkets Coles and Woolworths, both said there was nothing to worry about - they don't have any details of a shortage of any kind.
One Coles spokesperson said there's been an uplift in sales (although it is impossible to confirm whether this is due to Australians wanting to make 'crack'), telling us, "Salada Crackers continue to prove popular with customers with a 15 per cent uplift in sales since March".
So, crack fiends - never fear. The Saladas are in plentiful supply. Go forth and make crack.
