Hold the sauce, apparently a hot dog is a sandwich and people are fuming

The Merriam-Webster says it's so - but most people disagree.

The debate about whether a hot dog is a sandwich (yes, it has been rather passionately discussed) has had new fuel added to the flames - Merriam-Webster claims that a hotdog is most definitely a sandwich and people aren’t happy about it.

Merriam-Webster is self-proclaimed as America’s leading and most-trusted provider of language information. They publish and provide many dictionaries in print and online. Although the publisher is a trusted source for the English language, many people do not agree with their latest piece of information. Indeed, the Twittersphere has erupted.

It all began with this Tweet from Merriam-Webster:
Responses have started flooding in.
A few days earlier David Schwimmer (aka Ross from Friends) thought he’d settled the debate on his new AMC show Feed the Beast where he said that a hot dog is not a sandwich because he defines a sandwich as "two pieces of bread with stuff between it”.

It's not the first time the hot dog-sandwich debate has provoked passionate discussion. Last year, a sports journalist asked NFL quarterback Tyrod Taylor whether he thought a hot dog was a sandwich. “Naw…It’s not a sandwich if it’s in a bun," he replied. His answer was posted to Twitter and much debate ensued.
Last year America's National Hot Dog and Sausage Council released a statement saying "[The hot dog] is truly a category unto its own."

Where do you sit on this one? Is a hot dog a sandwich?
