The halal snack pack is back. On screen. With lashings of garlic sauce.
A parody video that goes above and beyond in its devotion to Halal Snack Packs is winning the hearts and bellies of HSP lovers across the Internet.
The video parodies Kelis’ Milkshake, the early 2000s hit that just keeps on giving, transforming the chorus into: “My snack pack brings all the lads to the yard, and they’re like bro is it halal?”
It has already racked up 89,000 views on Facebook alone, with HSP devotees turning out in droves to pay tribute, and the Halal Snack Pack Appreciation Society offering their seal of approval.
The video was created by Harrison Cox and his mates at The Slendy Show, a creative community dedicated to skits and parodies, festival humour and electronic dance music.
Cox says the response to the video has been amazing. “The best responses are when people say they’re going to go get a feed - and lots of people have been asking me about getting doused in sauce.”
He’s referring to one of the highlights of the video, in which Cox gets inundated by the “holy trinity” of sauces: garlic, chilli and barbeque. He refers to it as a “visceral experience.”
“It was quite funny, because what I envisaged initially was just one bottle of chilli sauce. But the owner of Metro One kebabs said nah, we'll hook you up, and he got like six bottles of two litre sauce and we went to town.”
The video also includes a nod to the great Pauline Hanson Halal Snack Pack drama, with Cox in a red wig singing: “Please explain?”
The Hanson-HSP debate sparked after fellow politician Senator Sam Dastyari invited her out for a snack pack, and she declined because she was “not interested in halal”.
Halal Snack Pack fans were outraged, and as a result there is now a petition urging Hanson to accept the invitation, and a crowdfunding campaign aiming to get an HSP delivered to Hanson every day that she sits in the senate.
As for the video, as Cox says, it’s all just a bit of fun - plus some meat, chips, cheese and a bunch of sauces.
