COVID-19 update: Deaths soar in Victoria, New South Wales updates COVID-19 regulations

This is your update on COVID-19 in Australia for 8 June.

On Wednesday, Australia reported at least 59 COVID-19 deaths, including 25 in Victoria, 15 in Queensland and 10 in New South Wales (NSW). Also, Western Australia reported eight historical deaths.

In Victoria, this is the highest daily number of deaths since 4 April.

NSW has updated its COVID-19 regulations. From today (8 June), COVID-19 Safe check-ins are no longer required at nightclubs, strip clubs, sex on premises venues and large indoor music festivals. However, businesses and organisations may continue to use them at their own discretion. You are no longer required to wear a mask or be vaccinated in order to attend a large indoor music festival.

Yesterday (7 June), the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government passed the Public Health Amendment Bill 2021 (No 2) in the Legislative Assembly. This will allow the ACT Government to continue protecting its citizens from the public health risks of COVID-19 while decreasing from the current public health emergency declaration.

ACT Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the changes passed will enable an ongoing proportionate and transparent public health response to COVID-19. The current public health emergency declaration is due to be reviewed by 11 August 2022.
