Celebration, survival and sorrow: Australia marks its national day

Across the nation, Australians have commemorated January 26 in their own way, with many celebrating, while others mourn the negative impacts of colonisation. A refreshed honours roll was also announced, as thousands of migrants mark their first day as new citizens.

There were cheers and jeers as Australia marks 237 years since colonisation began.
January 26 has attracted an annual protest since 1938 by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, many of whom observe a 'Day of Mourning', symbolising invasion, survival and sorrow.
For many migrants, January 26 is the day they got their citizenship.
