Hundreds of people were trapped in their homes in Victoria and South Australia as heavy rain and storms hit the two states. Authorities issued a warning for residents in Victoria's north and northeast for rainfall totalling up to 200mm, with extreme weather expected to hit parts of New South Wales.

Many areas of Victoria are on flood alert following a period of heavy rainfall across the state, with the State Emergency Service already receiving over 700 calls for assistance.

The Bureau of Meteorology said "widespread rain and thunderstorms are developing in the eastern interior", with Victoria facing possible flooding.

Residents in parts of Seymour and Yea in the state's centre were urged to evacuate their homes immediately.
