Economists are calling for the government to let migrants into Australia as soon as it's safe to do so, saying there will be significant financial consequences if the country fails to restore its intake to pre-pandemic levels.

Highlights

In the 20 years before COVID-19 hit, overseas net migration accounted for 57 per cent of Australia's annual population growth.

Skilled permanent residents have an employment participation rate of 92 per cent, compared with 66 per cent for the overall Australian working-age population.

The federal government's migration program will be announced in next month's May 11 budget.
