Mohammad Usman, a mechanical engineering student at Deakin University has been fined $1300 by a court in Geelong, Geelong Advertiser reports.

The court also suspended his Victorian driving licence for six months on Monday.

Usman, was caught by police driving at 100 km/hour in a 60 km/hour zone in Geelong in June. He was pulled over after police saw him run a red light.

When stopped, Usman provided an Indian driver’s licence with his photo and name Rajwant Singh. But when police asked him his date of birth, he stumbled and told police to take a look at the card.

Police asked Usman to produce further documents and found a Victorian driver’s licence on him with a different name.

The Victorian driving licence confirmed his real identity with proof of address.

Usman, who appeared at a court in Geelong, on Monday told the court, he was distracted at the time by the recent death of his grandfather.

“I was so depressed I didn’t realise I was going over the speed limit or going through a red light,” the defendant said.

He pleaded guilty to charges relating to the creation and use of the false document, speeding and running the traffic light.

Court observed that his act ‘could have killed somebody’.

“This is a serious thing to be doing to be deceiving police the way you have, and to be driving the way you did.”

Court fined him a total of $1300 and suspended his licence for six months.
