Vinay Desai, a disciple of well-known santoor maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, has learnt from many different maestros over the years. He has expanded his knowledge and skills in playing this ancient instrument from the Kashmir region of India.

In an interview with SBS Hindi, Mr Desai explained and demonstrated the technicality of 'sur' and 'lay' that Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma skilfully introduced to this ancient folk musical instrument.

"Fusion music is another genre, and I prefer to concentrate only on classical music. But those who compose fusion music need to have knowledge of classical music, or else one cannot create a musical piece," Mr Desai said.
