The city of Palembang, South Sumatra experienced heavy flooding at the end of December 2021 and the residents of the city sued the Palembang government for failing to provide adequate facilities and infrastructure to prevent the flood.

Usually, floods are considered as the impact of natural disasters. But this time, the people of Palembang did not take it for granted.
They sued the Palembang City government, believing that the government had failed to provide adequate infrastructure and facilities to prevent the flood.

This is the first time that a lawsuit against the government of a city in Indonesia has been brought before a court. And for the first time also in Indonesia, the citizens of a city, in this case Palembang, succeeded in defeating their own government in court.

Rustandi Adriansyah, from the Palembang Flood Victims Advocacy Team, will speak in the following interview, about how the lawsuit was brought to court, the reasons, including what the court ordered in its decision, which the Palembang city government had to implement.
