A defendant in a rape case has been acquitted by the Aceh Sharia Court. The basis for the release was deemed unreasonable, and the applicable legal regulations, namely the qanun or sharia law in Aceh, were deemed not to protect the 10-year-old victim.

The Aceh Civil Society Alliance asks for a legal breakthrough, by adjudicating cases of sexual violence of this kind using national laws, especially the Child Protection Law.

Azharul Husna, one of the members of this alliance explained about their efforts, related to the application of a more just law.
