A secretive inquiry is reportedly being held into allegations of war crimes committed by Australian soldiers during the war in Afghanistan.

NSW Supreme Court judge Paul Brereton is assisting the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force in a wide-ranging review, according to the ABC.

The scope or how many incidents were being probed is not clear.

One commando has revealed he played a role in covering up the unlawful execution of a captured enemy.

While his claims are unverified, the Defence Department confirmed to the ABC they are being investigated.

Commando Kevin Frost, who will soon leave the military, believes he should be punished "with the full weight of the law."
