An Indian-American doctor has been sentenced to 9 years imprisonment for a $3.1 million fraud. He has also been ordered to repay $3,103,874.

Dr. Paramjit Singh Ajrawat (60) from Maryland, America was convicted in September last year for a health care fraud in connection with the pain management clinic that he ran with his wife, Sukhveen Kaur.

Dr. Ajrawat was a licensed physician in Maryland who specialised in interventional pain management and co-owned the clinic with his wife. A federal jury convicted Dr. Ajrawat and his wife, Sukhveen Kaur, also a medical doctor. Charges against Dr. Sukhveen Ajrawat were dismissed after her death earlier this year.

Dr. Ajrawat has been found to have defrauded the federal health benefit programs between 2011 and 2014. The evidence showed the doctor couple billed the procedures that were never performed. In some cases, reimbursements were claimed for more expensive procedures that the ones actually performed.
