150 charges over Vic youth jail break

Police have laid more than 150 charges against 27 Victorian youth inmates after the January prison break and crime spree.

Police have charged dozens of youth offenders with more than 150 offences following January's riot and breakout at Victoria's Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.

About 30 inmates were involved in the uprising, with 15 of them then escaping after assaulting a staff member and stealing a security pass.

Eight were captured before nightfall, while the other seven were alleged to have armed themselves with a knife and a baseball bat and committed four armed robberies in Noble Park, Bonbeach and Moe.

The last two inmates were on the run for 24 hours before being arrested.

Police said on Friday night the Fugitive Taskforce was co-ordinating a "large and complex investigation supported by regional investigators who are dealing with incidents that occurred in a number of locations".

"At this time investigators have laid in excess of 150 charges and once these investigations and interviews are finalised there will be 27 offenders before the courts," a police spokeswoman told AAP.
