A satirical video aimed at a new immigration law in Denmark is going viral, as a fictional group asks Africans to 'Adopt-a-Dane' instead.

Created by Danish radio station P3-DR, the video pokes fun at the law recently passed by Denmark’s parliament which aimed at deterring refugees from seeking asylum by confiscating valuables to pay for their stay.

It features Jackson Nouwah, founder of the fictional 'Adopt A Dane Foundation', who tells people to dig deep to adopt a Danish senior.

It has amassed more than 28,000 views since its release five days ago.
Mr Nouwah said he was inspired to set up the group after seeing social media comments complaining of money being spent on Africa instead of old people in Denmark.

“Many elderly Danes write on Facebook that too much money is being sent to Africa instead of being spent on the elderly,” he says in the video.

“We knew we had to do something.”

The law

Danish police have been given the power to search asylum seekers and confiscate valuables worth over AUD$2,080 to help cover their housing and food costs while their cases are being processed.

Sentimental items, such as wedding rings, will be exempt.

International human rights organisations, including the UNHCR and Amnesty International, have condemned the measure.
A spokesman for the UN refugee agency, Adrian Edwards, said it sends a damaging message.

"It runs the risk of fuelling sentiments of fear and discrimination rather than promoting solidarity with people in need of protection," Mr Edwards said.

Danish government spokesman Marcus Knuth said the change simply makes asylum-seekers face the same conditions as Danes who apply for unemployment benefits.
