Air New Zealand has released a social media video lampooning the Australian cricket team in the wake of the ball-tampering row.

The video - released on the airline's social media pages on Wednesday - called Australian cricketer Steve Smith a "naughty boy".

"Hey Steve ... We hear you're heading home for some time off," the video said.

"This Friday, we're taking on the Poms again, in Christchurch ...  How about a masterclass in (legal) swing bowling?"

The airline then said New Zealand's cooler weather could provide a "nice way to escape the heat back home" and extended the invitation to "David and Cameron".

The video has resulted in trans-Tasman banter on social media.

Cricket Australia has slapped Smith and vice-captain David Warner with year-long suspensions following the ball-tampering, while Cameron Bancroft faces a nine-month ban.

Smith and Warner will return to Sydney on Thursday afternoon, where Smith is expected to face the media.
