Boxer Bianca Elmir is on a mission to represent Australia at next year's Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The 34-year-old athlete, known by the nickname 'Bam Bam', is a proud Muslim and is currently observing Ramadan.

Elmir hasn't been able to fast every day due to the physical demands of boxing.

"Leading up to a fight it's very difficult because everything is assessed," she told SBS World News.

"I have to be perfectly a certain weight to the gram."

She hopes to inspire young Muslim women by representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games, which are scheduled for two weeks in April.

"I hope that I can lead by example by showing you can be comfortable in your own skin," she said.

"Things will get tough sometimes, it's tough for everyone."

Her trainer, former Olympian Jamie Pittman says Elmir is destined for success.

"If she continues to grow and improve and stay obsessed with boxing the way she has the last six weeks, she will be going to the Commonwealth Games and winning a gold medal," Pittman said.

Elmir will attempt to qualify for the Australian team at November's National Championships in Brisbane.
