A drone has been captured on CCTV footage for the first time dropping contraband into a NSW prison.

A member of the public alerted prison authorities on Monday evening to the presence of the drone near Lithgow Correctional Centre.

The following morning, officers conducted raids at the jail and found an inmate with two packages concealed in his clothing that contained 403 steroid capsules, Corrections Minister David Elliott said in a statement on Thursday.

Minister for Corrections David Elliot said he will be looking at how to further prevent the use of drones around prisons.
“I thank the member of the public and staff for their prompt response and the recovery of this contraband,” Mr Elliot said in a statement.

“Drones are a threat to the safety and security of officers and the correctional system and I will be looking at what further safeguards can be put in place to further restrict the use of drones and other aircraft in the vicinity of ," he added.

Following a series of raids in the facility, an inmate was found to have two packages containing 403 capsules.

Corrective Services NSW Acting Commissioner Luke Grant said contraband entering prison through the use of drones is increasing.

“Our staff have been on the alert for drones for some time. The use of drones to introduce illegal items into prisons is an emerging issue,” he said.
