Australian voters have been urged to show respect towards political volunteers ahead of this year's federal election - no matter their colours.

In the wake of reports a NSW state Liberal candidate was verbally abused and had her sign broken while canvassing at a Sydney train station, ex-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull's daughter has spoken up for volunteers.

Daisy Turnbull Brown said she's copped plenty of abuse across 15 years of standing at ferry wharves, train stations, shopping centres and street corners.

She's even had flyers pinched and been spat on.

"You may disagree with the volunteers' political views," Ms Turnbull Brown wrote on Friday.

"You may think they represent some union-thug-backed-anti-retiree-tax-mediscare-festering-stop-the-boats boogeyman, but at least they have had the courage to throw on an oversized and ill-fitting t-shirt and stand up for something that they believe in.

"So this is what I beg of you: don't be a dick."

With nearly 100 days until the next federal election, due in May, volunteers from all parties will be giving up free time to spread their chosen message.

Ms Turnbull Brown said those with different views to volunteers should ponder the last time they stood up publicly for something they believed in.

A "thanks but I know who I'm voting for" brush-off was the only thing required.
