Facebook will brief Australia's federal politicians about how they can protect themselves from cyber security threats on the social network.

The minister in charge of cyber security, Dan Tehan, says Thursday's meeting, which will include an update on the current threat environment, is part of the government's efforts to ensure the integrity of Australia's democracy.

"The threat to our democracy from cyber criminals and cyber espionage is greater than partisan politics - the Australian people must have faith in our democratic systems," Mr Tehan said in a statement.
