Gamescom due to get underway in Germany

Fans in costumes, headsets, gaming consoles, the latest games - all the ingredients are there for this year's Gamescom to unveil the newest game tech.

More than 300,000 video game fans are heading to Germany for the chance to be among the first to play the latest games, including the new Call of Duty, when Gamescom gets underway in Cologne.

The video game trade show which is open to the public starts on Wednesday.

Fans often come dressed in costumes of their favourite characters and enjoy the chance of playing upcoming games for the first time.

The next instalment of the Call Of Duty series, Infinite Warfare, is tipped to be showcased this year.

EA Sports' Fifa 17, the latest in the long running soccer game franchise, is also expected to be a popular choice.

Sony's PlayStation VR headset is also likely to be on show, giving many consumers their first look at the system which is set to be released in October and is designed to plug directly into the PlayStation console in order to run.

Many rival virtual reality systems currently require a powerful PC to function properly.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are unlikely to give more details on their next generation of consoles, all of which are due to be released in the next year.

Microsoft plans Project Scorpio for late 2017, and claims it will be the "world's most powerful console", containing specifications similar to high-end gaming PCs.

Sony's PlayStation Neo is due later this year and is said to support ultra high definition 4K video, but the firm is planning a separate event in September to discuss the system.

While little is known of Nintendo's next console, the NX, reports suggest the Super Mario creator is unlikely to use Gamescom as the platform to finally reveal the device.
