A GoFundMe campaign has raised close to $600,000 ($A850,000) for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his family following allegations of sexual misconduct against him dating back more than three decades.

John Hawkins, who owns conservative blog Right Wing News, started the crowdfunding campaign to raise money to go towards security for the Kavanaugh family, claiming he was "disgusted" by the treatment of the Supreme Court nominee.

"Like many decent people from both parties, I have been disgusted by the unsubstantiated 36-year-old smears aimed at Brett Kavanaugh," the campaign description reads.

"We live in a country where innocent until proven guilty is supposed to mean something; yet Brett Kavanaugh's reputation is being dragged through the mud while his family is facing non-stop death threats.

"What I'd like to do is raise money for Brett Kavanaugh's family to use for security or however they see fit. All of the money collected will go to Brett Kavanaugh's family or alternately, if they refuse to accept it, to a charity of their choice."

The original goal of the campaign was to raise $100,000, but after donations didn't stop the goal was raised to $600,000.

US President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who had been a swing vote on a panel now equally divided between four conservative and four liberal justices.

But his Senate confirmation process had been roiled by the allegations from Dr Christine Blasey Ford and took place amid an atmosphere of bitter political partisanship in Washington.

Dr Blasey Ford testified last week that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a house party in the early 1980s while they were in high school.

Mr Kavanaugh rejected those allegations, as well as further sexual misconduct claims from two other women.
