Gosling to meet Suu Kyi on Myanmar trip

Labor MP Luke Gosling is in Myanmar and will meet Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi as a guest of a foundation started by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates.

Labor MP Luke Gosling will meet Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi when he visits that country as a guest of a foundation started by Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates.

The seven-day trip is hosted by Save the Children, while all travel and accommodation costs are covered by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The member for Solomon says he is taking part in the parliamentary delegation to gain a better understanding of Australia's international investments.

Mr Gosling plans to meet with ministers, officials, NGOs and business leaders regarding development, innovation, education and health partnerships while in Myanmar.

"I will be meeting with the Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi who I will invite to visit Darwin," he said.

Mr Gosling will also meet with the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce to discuss trade, innovation and other business opportunities including oil and gas, and cattle and meat exports, as well as tropical expertise.

"Myanmar is embarking on the process of democratisation and it has the fastest growing GDP in Asia," he said.

"It is important to establish relationships with countries in our region, particularly those that have had minimal previous contact with the Northern Territory."

The visit will cover Australia's bilateral assistance programs and include meetings with Oxfam, Save the Children and educational organisations.
