Two years since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more than 5.4 million people have died. 

More than 292 million people have contracted the virus and daily infection rates have again reached record highs in Australia, the US and parts of Europe as the Omicron variant spreads. 

While early studies show a reduced risk of hospitalisation and death for Omicron, the World Health Organization says more data is needed.
