An Indian student had to run for his life after he was attacked on a Melbourne street on Tuesday night.
Ranjeet Sidhu told SBS’s Punjabi radio program he had stopped at a kebab shop on Hoddle Street, Richmond on his way to work on Monday night when a man attacked.
“This man approached me and asked if I was a cop,” he said.
“I told him I wasn’t. A minute later, he again came back to me and asked if I was a cop. I again told him I wasn’t.
“When he returned the third time, I sensed something was wrong and sat in my car to leave.
“He tapped at my window and as soon as I came out of the car, he hit me with something he was hiding in his bag.”

Mr Sidhu said he was hit six times and had to run to escape his attacker, all the while trying to block the blows with his arms.
“When he hit me in the head repeatedly, I thought he was going to kill me then and there,” he said.
"I thought it was my last day. (I thought) He was going to kill me on the spot."
Mr Sidhu, who works as a security guard, was taken to hospital for treatment and needed 10 stitches to the wounds on his head.
He said the attack was unprovoked and he did not know his attacker or the weapon used.
The attacker, who is described as being a Caucasian man in his early thirties, is yet to be identified.
A spokeswoman from Victoria Police told SBS News the investigation is ongoing.
