A 77-year-old inmate has been charged with killing a fellow prisoner at Sydney's Long Bay prison.

Police said a 71-year-old inmate was found with serious head injuries in a cell at the Malabar jail on Monday night.

The victim was allegedly assaulted in the cell about 10.50pm on Monday, reportedly with a sandwich press.

Corrective Services officers gave first aid and the injured prisoner was taken to hospital, but later died.

He has been charged with murder and is due to appear at the Parramatta Bail Court on Wednesday.
