NT prisoner on run arrested still in cuffs

A prisoner who escaped from Darwin hospital has been rearrested two days and almost 1000km later, still wearing handcuffs.

A prisoner who escaped from Northern Territory police at Darwin's hospital has been rearrested about 1000km away, still in handcuffs.

Kim Thomas Riley, 27, escaped Royal Darwin Hospital on Monday evening while being assessed after complaining of chest pains.

Police say he was picked up by his partner and they drove more than 700km south of Darwin to Elliott, where he left her and her two young children on the side of the Stuart Highway before continuing on to Borroloola.

He was arrested near Cape Crawford without incident on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said Riley was still wearing his handcuffs at the time of his arrest and appeared to have an injured foot.

He will be returned to Darwin where police will conduct further investigations.
