New Zealand's state television broadcaster has apologised after posting footage of the country's prime minister breastfeeding in public.

Television New Zealand came under fire on Friday after posting online a clip of Jacinda Ardern feeding her newborn daughter Neve at a government announcement.

Ms Ardern returned to parliament after maternity leave this week and was on Friday announcing a ban on plastic shopping bags.

After speaking, she moved to the back of the room behind cameras to feed her daughter, but was filmed by a 1News camera.

The brief video was posted online and quickly sparked a series of complaints and arguments on social media.

It has since been taken down.
"Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was discussing the issue of single-use plastic bags and that should have been our focus," a TVNZ spokeswoman said.

"We accept the criticism. We got it wrong."

Ms Ardern, 38, became the first world leader to take maternity leave.
