Federal Labor hopes Israel and Palestine will return to peace talks after Jerusalem suffered its bloodiest day in a fortnight of growing unrest.

At least three Israelis have died after Palestinian attackers shot at a bus and drove a car into pedestrians.

Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday it was a tragedy lives were still being lost following the bloodshed of recent years.
