Qld MP hits back after harassment claims

A Queensland politician accused of sexually harassing young women has hit back at the claims in state parliament.

A Queensland politician dropped by his party after being accused of sexually harassing a young woman says the allegations are a malicious attempt to destroy his career.

Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan, 47, was thrown out of the opposition Liberal National Party over a sexual harassment complaint by the family of an 18-year-old woman.

A series of other accusations surfaced later.

"I do not believe I did anything wrong whatsoever," he told parliament on Tuesday.

"I shall be taking the strongest possible action against the person or persons involved in what can only be described as a malicious attempt to destroy someone's career."

Mr Costigan was absent when details of the initial complaint and allegations by other women were aired under parliamentary privilege.

Leader of Opposition Business Jarrod Bleijie told parliament the 18-year-old had feared she would be raped by Mr Costigan at her grandparents' home in rural in Victoria last month.

He said her family alleged a "half naked" Mr Costigan followed her into a bedroom, closed the door behind them and went on to tell her she was pretty and that he liked young girls.

Mr Bleijie also told parliament Mr Costigan touched her back and hair, offered to fly her to his electorate to visit him and handled underwear she had dropped.

But the now independent MP insists the accusation is false.

"The comments made in this place by the members of the Opposition made me sick," he said.

"They were misleading, exaggerated, deceptive, extremely hurtful and politically-loaded to say the least.

Mr Costigan says he has been targeted by his former colleagues who wanted him gone.

"I never claimed to be perfect, and if I have offended anyone, I most sincerely apologise," he told parliament.

"That said, I will take up the fight to clear my name, and stare down anyone who tries to tarnish it."
