Record number of international students

The number of international students coming to Australia has surged by more than 10 per cent to almost 555,000 people from almost 200 countries.

The number of international students coming to Australia has surged by more than 10 per cent in the past year.

A record 554,179 students from almost 200 countries studied in Australia last year, with higher education enrolments surging 13 per cent and enrolments in vocational education and training climbing 12 per cent.

"With record student numbers and record student satisfaction, 2016 was a gangbuster year for international education in Australia and the vital role it plays in our national economic and social prosperity," Education Minister Simon Birmingham said on Wednesday.
