Rioting inmates set WA centre ablaze

Three inmates at a Perth detention centre were injured following a fire after a riot broke out.

Three youths at a Perth detention centre have been injured after a fire was started by rioting inmates.

The fire at Banksia Hill Detention Centre in Canning Vale was started by inmates about 7pm on Thursday, before guards quickly put it out.

A Department of Corrective Services spokesman has told The West Australian that five male offenders started the trouble and at least three were injured during a stand-off with staff.

One of the youths sustained an eye injury, another cut his leg, while a third suffered an asthma attack, but no staff at the centre were injured.

The DCS spokesperson said a special operations team was brought in and the riot was resolved.

The centre has been the site of several violent outbreaks.

An inspection of the centre will take place to determine the extent of the damage and WA Police will issue a statement on Friday morning.
