Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia President Atsushi Morita said pre-sale bookings were full long before the launch.

Hundreds of people had queued up outside shops in Tokyo on Thursday morning, and many large electronic stores in the region of Akihabara - known as the electronic district- reported having sold out their stocks.

The PSVR, which went on sale in 42 countries at a price of $US399 ($A530), currently includes 26 games, although Sony plans to launch more than 50 this year, director of the company's hardware global product strategy and management Yasuo Takahashi told EFE.

The video games sector is one of Sony's key areas and in which it has already sold more than 40 million PlayStation 4 consoles that are required to use the new device.

With more than 330 developers working to create content on PlayStation VR, more games can be expected in the future and Sony is reportedly working towards using this technology in other fields, including business, education, health and movies.
