Sony sells more than 50 million PS4 units

Sony says it has sold more than 50 million units of its PlayStation 4 console worldwide.

Japanese video games manufacturer Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced it has sold more than 50 million units of its PlayStation 4 console worldwide.

The device first released in the US in 2013 and now available in 122 countries, reached its sales peak during the Black Friday week from November 21 to 27.

"We're truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since its launch three years ago," said Andrew House, president and global CEO of SIE, in a company statement.

The sales data also include that of its recent PlayStation 4 Pro released in November, whose game sales reached 369.6 million worldwide.

However, despite the latest sales figure, the console is still far away from touching its historical bestsellers: PlayStation 2 (157 million units sold), portable Nintendo DS (154 million) and Gameboy (118 million).
