A Sydney man can well and truly lay claim to securing the "catch of the day," after making the most of floodwaters creeping dangerously close to his apartment building.

Vincent Cotte's block is usually 30 metres from the edge of Narrabeen Lake on the city's Northern Beaches but, as the entire NSW coast was thrashed by an east coast low on Sunday, he suddenly found himself a lot closer to the waterline.

"We were actually helping people move stuff to higher ground from their garages as the water continued to rise, and once that was done we decided that maybe we should give this a shot," Mr Cottee told Channel 7.
"The water was about knee deep. We threw a line out and what do you know, it came up trumps," he said.

Home videos show Mr Cotte bringing a small fish over the railing of his second-storey balcony with a fishing line, before throwing it back into the muddy waters.

"It’s like Christmas," he's heard saying.

"Look at them, there are heaps of fish."

Mr Cotte said catching a fish from his apartment is something he's often talked about.

"A few of the boys in the block, over a few beers, have always joked about catching some fish from our balcony and yesterday I was lucky enough for that to come true."
