German police say they are investigating the deaths of three people whose bodies were found with crossbow bolts in them in a hotel room in Bavaria.

The corpses, all German citizens, and two crossbows were discovered around noon Saturday in the remote riverside hotel in the city of Passau near the Austrian border.

German news agency dpa reported on Sunday that employees of a hotel found the bodies and two crossbows in the room.

The three were a 33-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man from Rhineland-Palatinate state and a 30-year-old woman from Lower Saxony, who had jointly booked the room on Friday.

According to the BBC, another hotel guest told local newspaper Passauer Neue Presse that it had been a "completely quiet night".

They said it is not clear what their relationship was, what happened inside the hotel room or how exactly the three died.

The Mirror reports the hotel was the Gasthof Pension Zur Triftsperre.

Prosecutors have ordered an autopsy. Police said there were no initial indications that anyone else was involved.
