Timeline: Amanda Knox case

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito have today been found guilty of the murder of British student Meredith Kercher after judges in Florence overruled their previous acquittal. We take a look back at the history of this controversial case.

November 2, 2007

British student Meredith Kercher is found dead with her throat cut at the Perugia house she shared with Amanda Knox.

November 5, 2007

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito and questioned by police. Knox implicates her boss, bar owner Patrick Lumumba, in the crime and allegedly confesses to being at home during the killing.

November 20, 2007

Mr Lumumba’s alibi is corroborated and he is released from prison after two weeks.

December 2007

Ivory Coast national Rudy Guede is found in Italy and extradited to Italy. DNA taken from Ms Kercher’s body matches Mr Guede, who admits to having sex with her but says he was in the bathroom when she was killed.

July 11, 2008

Rudy Guede, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito are charged with murder.

September 6, 2008

In an attempt to separate himself from negative publicty surrounding the couple, Rudy Guede asks for a separate trial.

October 28, 2008

Guede is found guilty of murder and sentenced to 30 years’ jail.

January 16, 2009

The trial of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito begins.

December 4, 2009

The jury finds the pair guilty of the death of Meredith Kercher. Knox gets a 26-year sentence and Sollecito gets 25 years.

November 24, 2010

Knox and Sollecito's appeal against their murderd charges begins.

June 27, 2011

During his testimony, Guede refuses to say that Knox was not involved in the murder. Knox testifies that she is "shocked" by what he said. "He knows what the truth is. I don't know what happened that night," she says.

July 25, 2011

Experts criticise the police investigation into the murder and say forensic scientists made a number of errors.

October 3, 2011

A jury overturns Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito’s 2009 murder convictions but Knox is found guilty of defaming her former boss, bar owner Patrick Lumumba.

Knox returns to the United States.

March 26, 2013

At the Supreme Court, judges rule that the pair must stand trial again for the murder of Kercher.

September 30, 2013

The retrial begins. Amanda Knox does not return to Italy to face court.

November 6, 2013

Raffaele Sollecito appears in court and speaks of his anguish.

"There was not a basis to charge me, to put me in jail ... I don't wish anybody on Earth to go through what I went through," he says.

January 31, 2014

Knox and Sollecito are again found guilty of murder and sentenced to 28.5 years in prison.
