United States Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has sparked controversy again, this time with his response to the grieving father and mother of a dead US soldier.

Humayun Khan, an army captain and son of Muslim immigrants, died while fighting in Iraq 12 years ago.

His father, Khizr Khan, described his 27 year-old son's death to a captivated audience at the Democratic national convention last week and said: "We are honoured to stand here as parents of Captain Humayun Khan."

He then delivered a blistering attack on Donald Trump, waving a copy of the US constitution.

"You have sacrificed nothing ... and no-one! Let me ask you ... have you even read the United States constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy."

Mr Trump responded, saying, like the Khans, he, too, has made sacrifices.

"I think I have made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. I've created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. I've done ... I've had tremendous success."

(Reporter:) "Those are sacrifices?"

"Oh sure, I think they're sacrifices."

But, contentiously, he implied Mrs Khan did not speak at the convention because she may not have been allowed to.

"Look at his wife, she was standing there, she had nothing to say. She probably ... maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me, but plenty of people have written that."

Ghazala Khan broke her silence to respond on national television.

"Please, Mr Trump, feel that pain, and you will be better at understanding me. Please, I am very upset when I heard that I didn't say anything, because I was in pain. When you are in pain, you fight or you don't say anything. I am not a fighter. I can't fight. So, the best thing I did was (keep) quiet."

There are questions over whether Donald Trump has gone too far in criticising a dead soldier's mother.

Fellow Republicans have quickly tried to mitigate the reaction, with House Speaker Paul Ryan issuing a statement praising the many Muslims who have served in the US military.

But Donald Trump maintains it is a national security issue.

"Well, I'd say we have had a lot of problems with radical Islamic terrorism, that's what I'd say. We have a lot of problems where ... you look at San Bernardino, you look at Orlando, you look at the World Trade Centre, you look at so many different things. You look at what happened to the priest over the weekend in Paris, where his throat was cut, 85 year-old, beloved Catholic priest. You look at what happened in Nice, France, a couple of weeks ago. I'd say, you got to take a look at that, because something's going on and it's not good."

Mr Trump says Mr Khan had no right to stand in front of millions of people last week and make false claims against him.

But Khizr Khan says the way Donald Trump showed disrespect towards the mother of a US soldier killed at war says it all.

"My wife. The brave mother of my son, Captain Humayun Khan, a hero of this country. We don't take these values lightly. We are a testament to the goodness of this country. We experience the goodness of this country every day. It affirms our belief that we made the right choice. But then to see ... when we got back home, our four-year-old granddaughter said to her grandmother, 'Why were you so upset? Why would you so sad?' A four year-old person can feel that sadness, yet the candidate for the president of the United States cannot empathise with the people that he wishes to lead?"
