US media outlets should compete for a "fake news trophy," Donald Trump has proposed, as he fired another salvo at the news media for what he perceives as negative coverage of his presidency.

"We should have a contest as to which of the networks, plus CNN and not including Fox, is the most dishonest, corrupt and/or distorted in its political coverage of your favourite president (me)," Trump wrote on Twitter, making a point to exempt his preferred cable network, Fox, from criticism.

"They are all bad. Winner to receive the FAKE NEWS TROPHY!"

It's not clear if a specific report prompted this latest outburst.

Trump has made regular criticism of the media central to his online persona for years. He routinely attacked broadcasters, newspapers and even individual journalists during his campaign rallies last year.

Trump has also been critical of the proposed merger of telecommunications giant AT&T and media company Time Warner, which owns CNN, calling it last week "a deal that's not good for the country." The Justice Department is suing to block the merger.
