Victorian police say they have found the body of a man, believed to be missing Melbourne man Poshik Sharma.

Emergency services discovered the body in Marysville, in the Yarra Valley, about 11am.

Mr Sharma was reported missing after he left the Duck Inn in Marysville about 4.30pm on Thursday, 11 July.

The 21-year-old’s disappearance sparked a large-scale search, with police fearing the Indian student may have tried to hitchhike back to Melbourne after an argument with friends.

Police said they held grave concerns for Mr Sharma because of the cold conditions.

A Victorian police spokeswoman said the death is not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Police previously said they held concerns for Mr Sharma's welfare given the amount of time he's been missing and the recent cold overnight temperatures.

"He has completely gone off the grid which is completely unusual for a young man," Insp David Ryan told reporters on Sunday.

Mr Sharma has not spoken to friends or family, used his phone or social media.

Emergency services drained a dam as part of the search through the surrounding bushland.

Friend Prince Teona said they had not told Mr Sharma's parents in India their son was missing, preferring to hang on to hope they will find him first.

"We are trying our best so that we find him before they get to know about that one because he is the only son," he told Nine News.
