WA Labor pledges support for start-ups

WA Labor wants to create a $14.5 million new industries fund to support start-up businesses involved in digital media, app development and computer games.

The WA opposition wants to create a $14.5 million new industries fund to support start-up businesses in the technology and computer gaming sectors.

Under Labor's plan, start-ups could access the funds for business skills, marketing support, investment strategy and advocacy work.

Companies to benefit would include those involved in digital media, app development, computer animation and computer game development.

Labor leader Mark McGowan said the funding would be spread over five years, with $10 million for city-based projects and the remainder going to rural areas.

Mr McGowan said the program was a way of diversifying the economy as the mining sector slowed down.

"I want to ensure that our best and brightest remain in our state, go on and use their creative abilities to create great businesses, great companies, great opportunities for West Australians," he told reporters on Monday.

"This is a major part of our state's future."

Mr McGowan said while the Victorian and NSW governments had supported start-ups, WA lagged behind in comparison, with the Liberals showing little interest.

He said two-thirds of Australia's start-ups operated out of Sydney, while 40 per cent of games produced in Australia came from Victoria where state funding was provided for game development.

The Labor leader conceded the proposed fund did not provide a lot of money, but said it would foster much-needed innovation in the state.
