Wallaroos aim at Irish in Rugby World Cup

Wallaroos coach Paul Verrell is claiming all the pressure is on tournament host Ireland going into Australia's first match of the Women's Rugby World Cup.

Wallaroos coach Paul Verrell says all the pressure is on Ireland, as Australia aims to maintain their impeccable Women's' Rugby World Cup record against the host nation in their opening match of the 2017 tournament

Australia have won their two previous World Cup matches against Ireland, who they will face in Dublin on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

Tom Tierney's are ranked fifth in the world, one place above Australia, who have embraced the underdog tag.

The Irish finished second in the 2017 European Six Nations tournament earlier this year with a 4-1 record, conceding just 69 points, but only scoring 81.

"I think all the pressure is on them, they are the home nation hosting the World Cup," Verrell said.

"(If) we're in front heading into that last 10, 15 minutes I think all the pressure is on them and thats what we're aiming to do

"We'll be there to finish it off and put them away at the end."

Ireland captain and flanker Claire Molloy said she wanted her side to be "excellent, accurate and clinical."

Molloy, who leads the side in the absence of injured fullback Niamh Briggs, understands why the Wallaroos want to be a nuisance to the tournament hosts.

"We're 'expecting a strong physical battle, we're expecting them to challenge us,' Molloy," said on Irish Rugby TV.

"They really want to knock us off our post, they want to beat the host nation, I don't blame them, I would if I was in their position.

"But we've got to be strong, confident in ourselves."

Five eighth Trilleen Pomare and winger Mahalia Murphy, the only two uncapped players in the Wallaroos squad, will each make their Test debut against Ireland.

"Coming into the squad late, if I got game time it was going to be a bonus, so starting is a huge opportunity," Pomare said.

Murphy is one of three sevens players in the team, along with two of the Rio Olympics gold medal-winning squad in Wallaroos captain and flanker Shannon Parry and centre Sharni Williams.
