A homeless man who used his last $20 to buy petrol for a woman who had run out has been repaid with an online fundraiser that's accumulated more than $US60,000 ($A78,000) so far.

Kate McClure's car ran out of petrol on a Philadelphia highway last month and homeless man Johnny Bobbitt Jr. came to her aid, offering to walk a few blocks to a petrol station and use the money he had to get her back on the road.

At the time McClure didn't have any cash to give him but returned to the road several times bringing cash, clothes and food for Bobbitt.
She soon became inspired to do something more to help the 34-year-old so set up the GoFundMe fundraiser to help him find accommodation.

"I wish that I could do more for this selfless man, who went out of his way just to help me that day," she wrote on the fundraising page, which has so far raised $US60,000 from 2000 contributors.

"Truly believe that all Johnny needs is one little break. Hopefully with your help I can be the one to give it to him."
