Spike in Iran's use of capital punishment raises alarm among human rights groups

Human rights groups say they are gravely concerned about a dramatic spike in Iran's use of capital punishment. According to activist group Iran Human Rights Monitor, the first 10 days of this month saw at least 40 prisoners executed, amounting to one person every six hours. Executions surged by 43% following the start of the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' protest, sparked by the suspicious death in custody of Mahsa Jina Amini in 2022, allegedly arrested for not wearing her hijab correctly.
