The water supply for Central Australia’s largest remote Aboriginal community is at “severe risk” and local are frustrated authorities are treating the issue as urgent.
Some Traditional Owners in Yuendumu, almost 300km north-west of Alice Springs, say water is almost undrinkable and are concerned the NT government is not acting fast enough.
Dale Wakefield, the NT Minister for Essential Services, says the water quality passes current health standards but has halted all new construction in the community due to water shortages.
"We have had some comments about the taste changing as we do drill deeper into the current resource, however we feel that will be fixed when we move the production bores further and deeper into the resource," she told the ABC.
