The peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media has welcomed a new CEO, along with a number of fresh board appointments.

Wardaman, Luritja, Warramunga and Wagadagam man Dennis Stokes began his tenure as CEO on Monday after the departure of Catherine Liddle in February.

Mr Stokes has held roles in several media companies since 2001, including at NITV.

The role of First Nations media is in the spotlight at the moment, as the importance of delivering information in language, particularly health advice, has become critical in light of the pandemic.

Media organisations managed by First Nations peoples are an essential service in our communities, as for many remote peoples they are the only source of information.

"They provide access to locally relevant information services, support health and wellbeing, provide meaningful employment and skills, strengthen cultural identity and support social and economic development."

Less than 10 per cent of the Indigenous population have received their first dose of the vaccine, and the government has been accused of failing to adequately promote the cause.
